What it is

Built for the gap between
talent and craft discipline.

The Writer's Studio began as a private tool — built by a novelist, for a novel. It grew into a complete writing environment: twelve tools that work together, from the first rough chapter to the agent query letter, drawing on frameworks from trauma psychology, somatic theory, and the craft traditions of literary fiction.

This is not a tool for writers who want to generate prose. It is a tool for writers who want to understand what their prose is doing — and strengthen it with intention. Every analysis, every evaluation, every suggested revision is grounded in the question that matters: what is this scene asking of the reader, and is it earning it?

Six clinical lenses — van der Kolk, Levine, Porges, Maté, Schwartz, and Pesso Boyden — read a scene for what the body knows before the mind catches up. And because no two novels ask the same questions of the world, the Reference Library lets you research any subject yours needs — theology, temperament, historical tradecraft, a medical condition — and turn it into a lens of your own, applied to your scenes exactly like the frameworks built in from the start.

The Studio is developed by A.M. Gray under Gray Creative LLC. A limited early access release is planned. The novel it was built alongside is coming.

"Good fiction inspires the reader to expand their thinking and ask better questions. But first, it changes the writer. The gap between talent and craft discipline is where that change happens."

The Suite

Twelve tools.
One manuscript.

Each tool has a specific job. Together they cover the full arc from rough draft to submission-ready manuscript — with the craft frameworks embedded at every stage.

📖
Project Manager
Your novel's central hub. Chapters, characters, research, locations, comp titles, agent queries, and publishing tracking — all in one place, connected to every other tool.
Dashboard
Studio home. Manuscript architecture visualizer shows your progress as a skyline — current draft and what completion looks like. Genre focus, word count, encouragement for the hard days.
Draft Checker
Evaluates passages against five draft levels — Rough Write through Final. Plot consistency analysis, one and five-page synopsis tools, and a Craft Prescription system that maps your specific gaps to resources and exercises.
Scene Workshop
Ten-tab analysis: instant pattern checking (MRU, POV, tension, voice) plus AI panels drawing on Truby, Rosenfeld, six somatic psychology frameworks — van der Kolk, Levine, Porges, Maté, IFS, PBSP — and any custom framework you've researched and built in the Reference Library.
Dialogue Lab
Line-by-line function audit, subtext mapping, power dynamics tracking, and voice distinctness scoring. Includes a rewrite mode that demonstrates the craft principles in practice on your actual scene.
POV Lab
Deep POV analysis: filter words, POV violations, interiority calibration. Results save back to the Project Manager and are visible in the chapter view.
Developmental Editor
Macro manuscript analysis reading directly from your Project Manager. Six modules, three depth levels. Late-stage tool: Reader Reviews generate an appreciative reader response through the craft lens your comp authors represent — what worked, what stayed, what moved them.
👤
Character Bible
Complete character vault — editable in place, synced with the Project Manager, with Obsidian markdown import and Word export. Every field is live: wound, misbelief, arc, voice, extended notes — linked directly to the psychology frameworks that apply to each character.
📚
Reference Library
Pre-loaded psychology frameworks — Polyvagal Theory, Attachment Theory, Corrective Relational Experience, Moral Injury — plus the clinical disorders that shape character, cross-referenced and searchable. Then research any subject your novel needs and build it into a lens of your own, ready to apply to any scene.
Manuscript Compiler
Assembles your chapter text into a submission-ready .docx file. Industry-standard formatting, running headers, title page. Full manuscript, first 50 pages, or custom range.
📬
Publishing Tracker
Step-by-step checklists for traditional and self-publishing paths, linked live to your query workshop and synopsis tools. Milestone tracking with countdown dates.
Query Workshop
Five-dimension query letter evaluation, agent simulation (reads as a specific named agent), and annotated example letter generation — built into the Project Manager's agent tracking system.

How it works

Simple. Portable. Yours.

The Writer's Studio is a single, self-contained file that opens directly in your browser — no server to reach, no installation, no build process. Your project — chapters, characters, research, and everything you've built in the Reference Library — can back up to the cloud, tied to your own access code, so your work follows you if you move between a laptop and a desktop. That sync is always visible when it's active, and every session can be run local-only if you'd rather it stay on one machine.

The AI-powered analysis tools use Anthropic's Claude API, which requires an API key you provide directly — a small per-use cost, billed to you, with no markup. When you ask a tool to analyze a passage, that passage goes to Anthropic for that one request. The structural pattern-checking tools — filter words, POV violations, sentence rhythm — run entirely offline, with no API call at all.

Mac and Windows, any modern browser. A standalone desktop application is in development for writers who prefer a native experience. Early access begins with the current version.
